Learning to Solve Complex Propositions: Does knowledge of truth-values bootstrap modal operators?

چکیده

Evaluating complex propositions requires evaluating truthvalues and assigning modal operators. Previous research suggested that evaluating truth-values may be the key to assigning modal operators. This study placed 111 third and fifth grade children in one of three training conditions: no training, training truth-value assignment, and training truthvalue and modal operator assignment. The results indicate that truth-value assignment training is sufficient to significantly improve children’s evaluations of complex

A GODEL MODAL LOGIC 1 ( revised Dec . 2008 )

Sometimes it is needed in approximate reasoning to deal simultaneously with both fuzziness of propositions and modalities, for instance one may try to assign a degree of truth to propositions like “John is possibly tall”or “John is necessarily tall”, where “John is tall”is presented as a fuzzy proposition. Fuzzy logic should be a suitable tool to model not only vagueness but also other kinds of...

Autoreferential semantics for many-valued modal logics

In this paper we consider the class of truth-functional modal many-valued logics with the complete lattice of truth-values. The conjunction and disjunction logic operators correspond to the meet and join operators of the lattices, while the negation is independently introduced as a hierarchy of antitonic operators which invert bottom and top elements. The non-constructive logic implication will...

Epistemic possibilities for constructive reasoning with open assumptions

For the verificationist principle of truth underlying intuitionistic logic and constructivism, semantic truth conditions for propositions are substituted by syntactically defined assertion conditions for judgments ([2]). Where the standard interpretation of such notion of truth is given in a language for arithmetic, far less clear is how to interpret it for the representation of rational knowle...

More on Operators and Tense

* MICHAEL GLANZBERG Cappelen and Hawthorne's Relativism and Monadic Truth (2009) offers an extended defense of a thesis they call simplicity, which, in brief, holds that propositions are true or false simpliciter. Propositions are cast in their traditional roles as the contents of assertions, and as the semantic values of declarative sentences in contexts. Simplicity stands in sharp contrast to...

Topos-Theoretic Extension of a Modal Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

This paper deals with topos-theoretic truth-value valuations of quantum propositions. Concretely, a mathematical framework of a specific type of modal approach is extended to the topos theory, and further, structures of the obtained truth-value valuations are investigated. What is taken up is the modal approach based on a determinate lattice D(e,R), which is a sublattice of the lattice L of all...
